COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          21 teams (domestic champions plus title holder) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.

·          Ties at the end of regulation are decided by a five-minute extra-time. Ultimate ties after two legs are resolved with a third game at a neutral venue (or a participant’s court, if so agreed).

·          The final is played on a home and away basis.

RESUMEN (SUMMARY)

Pese a los 21 puntos de ventaja que había acumulado el Armijas Sporta Klubs de Riga en el partido de ida, cerca de 20.000 personas se dieron cita en el estadio Vasil Levski de Sofía con la esperanza de que se produjera un milagro y su equipo conquistara la II Copa de Europa en la repetición de la final del año anterior. Finalmente no pudo ser, aunque el Akademik logró retirarse del terreno de juego con dignidad, porque a lo largo de todo el partido trató de tú a tú al poderoso equipo soviético.

 

Desde el inicio del encuentro los búlgaros se lanzaron a un ataque frenético, con una defensa en zona que propiciaba rápidos contraataques, y esto les llevó a obtener una ventaja de ocho puntos a los cuatro minutos (9-1). Sin embargo, tras un tiempo muerto de Aleksandr Gomel’skij el ASK se aplicó con más intensidad en defensa y más paciencia para atacar la zona búlgara, y tras lograr igualar el marcador (15-15) el partido entró en una dinámica de mayor igualdad y los empates se sucedieron constantemente en el marcador, hasta llegar a un 65-65 a falta de dos minutos con el que, ya sí, los locales bajaron los brazos de forma definitiva. Aprovechando el desinflamiento del cuadro búlgaro en estos últimos compases del partido, el ASK pudo incluso alzarse con la victoria final gracias a dos magníficas canastas de Valdis Muižnieks (67-69).
