| COMPETITION SYSTEM
·
25 teams (domestic champions plus title holder) playing
knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score
of both games decides the winner. Ties after two legs are resolved
with a third game at a neutral venue (or a participant’s court,
if so agreed).
·
The eight teams qualified for 1/4 Finals are divided into two groups of four. Every team plays
against the other three in its group in consecutive home-and-away
matches, so that every two of these games count as a single
win or defeat (point difference being a decisive factor here).
In case of a tie between two or more teams after this group
stage, the following criteria is used to decide the final standing:
1) one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average; 3)
individual wins and defeats. · The group winners and runners-up of the 1/4 Final round qualify for the Final Stage, held at a single venue. |

| RESUMEN (SUMMARY) A pesar del irregular juego desarrollado durante toda la temporada (cediendo incluso su abrumador dominio en el Campeonato de Liga al Juventud de Badalona), el Real Madrid logró conquistar por tercera vez la Copa de Europa en la final disputada en su propia pista ante la Simmenthal de Milán. Sin duda, una parte importante de este éxito se lo debe el equipo a su vicepresidente, Raimundo Saporta, que solicitó (y consiguió) la celebración de la Fase Final en Madrid para facilitar la conquista del título continental, única vía de acceso del equipo blanco a la siguiente edición de la Copa de Europa.
En semifinales, los blancos tuvieron muchas dificultades para vencer al Olimpija de Ljubljana, dirigido por ese veterano y siempre joven Daneu. En la otra semifinal, el Slavia de Praga también puso en apuros al campeón de Italia. En la gran final, Real Madrid y Simmenthal se presentaban con estados de ánimo bien distintos: los madridistas, sabedores de que sólo la victoria les garantizaba su presencia la temporada siguiente en la Copa de Europa; los italianos, menos tensos quizá por la confianza en sus propias fuerzas y por saberse favoritos para alzar el título en casi todas las apuestas.
Desde el pitido inicial, Real Madrid y Simmenthal se lanzaron a un tremendo duelo de poder a poder, convencidos de sus propias posibilidades. La poderosa escuadra italiana se vio sorprendida en los primeros minutos por la velocidad y la iniciativa del equipo blanco, aunque la igualdad predominó en el marcador durante todo el primer tiempo. Las fuertes defensas de ambos equipos se tradujeron en un gran número de faltas personales, y el primer damnificado fue José Ramón Ramos, que a veinte segundos del descanso fue eliminado tras haber intentado neutralizar (sin éxito) al escolta norteamericano Steve Chubin.
Tras el descanso, la intensidad defensiva de la Simmenthal pasó factura en forma de eliminaciones de Robbins y Masini, lo que debilitó el juego interior de los milanistas y permitió un ligero despegue del Real Madrid (70-66, min. 33). Fue entonces cuando se produjo la eliminación de Luyk, que estaba cuajando un partido soberbio tanto en defensa como en ataque, y esta circunstancia pareció que podría ser una losa en el juego del Real Madrid. Sin embargo, en ese momento surgió la figura de Emiliano, que tiró del carro madridista con su habitual repertorio de canastas y penetraciones. En la Simmenthal, Chubin seguía con su particular festival anotador, y en medio de una gran igualdad se entró en los últimos cinco minutos con todo por decidir aún (74-74). En este tramo final del partido, la inspiración de Emiliano y el empuje del público hicieron que el Real Madrid cobrara una ventaja de siete puntos (85-78) que, a tres minutos del final, parecía ya definitiva para el desenlace del encuentro. Los italianos no se rindieron y se lanzaron a un pressing a toda pista para intentar recortar diferencias (aun a costa de perder a su mejor hombre, Chubin, que caía eliminado a falta de un minuto y medio para el final), pero los blancos supieron jugar con cabeza estos últimos instantes y lograron incluso la máxima ventaja de todo el partido (90-79) para certificar el triunfo y la conquista de su tercera Copa de Europa.
En el plano individual, dos madridistas rayaron a gran altura. Uno de ellos, “la pantera negra” Aiken, consiguió anular en defensa a Robbins, al tiempo que sus felices penetraciones bajo la canasta milanista lograban cestas portentosas y cargaban de personales al mismo Robbins y a Masini. Por su parte, Emiliano fue una vez más el jugador resolutivo de las grandes ocasiones, y con sus canastas en los últimos minutos del partido amartilló al vigente campeón europeo. |
