COMPETITION SYSTEM
·
22 teams (domestic champions plus title holder) enter
a 1/4 Final stage, divided
into six groups
playing a round-robin. The final standing is based on individual
wins and defeats. In case of a tie between two or more teams
after this group stage, the following criteria is used to decide
the final classification: 1) number of wins in one-to-one games
between the teams; 2) basket average between the teams; 3) general
basket average within the group.

The six group winners of the 1/4 Final stage access a
1/2 Final stage, played as a single group under the same round-robin
system. · The winner and runner-up of the 1/2 Final round qualify for the final, played at a predetermined venue. |

RESUMEN (SUMMARY) Séptima Copa de Europa para el Real Madrid, en medio de un ambiente de total dominio en las gradas por parte de los seguidores israelíes. Pese a que el Maccabi se presentaba en la final con la vitola de favorito, los madridistas lograron una merecida victoria tras dominar en el juego y en el marcador durante todo el encuentro.
Ambos conjuntos comenzaron el partido con defensa individual, aunque Lolo Sáinz había reservado a su colega Klein una sorpresa táctica que el experimentado técnico israelí tardó en asimilar. Se trataba de una defensa alternativa de individual a zona según lo que hubiera ocurrido en el ataque anterior. Si el Real Madrid anotaba por medio de alguno de sus pivots (Rullán o Meister) o bien si fallaba el ataque, mantenía en su balance posterior una defensa individual; pero si el que anotaba era alguno de los hombres exteriores (Corbalán, Brabender o Walter) se pasaba automáticamente a defender en zona presionante. Esta complicada estrategia hizo que el Maccabi se despistara en más de una ocasión, y cuando quiso reaccionar se encontró ya muy abajo en el marcador (26-14, min. 11). Pese a que Klein intentó contrarrestar el juego del Real Madrid con numerosos cambios, la defensa macabea era un auténtico coladero, sobre todo en la zona, por donde Rullán y Meister penetraban una y otra vez hacia canasta. Aroesti, Silver y un desconocido Berkowitz no tenían apenas aportación ofensiva, y en defensa ayudaban poco a sus pivots. Con este panorama, el conjunto madridista se retiró al descanso con una clara ventaja sobre sus rivales (48-40).
Tras la reanudación, el Real Madrid continuó con su racha anotadora, y a los tres minutos de la segunda mitad logró su máxima ventaja hasta ese momento (55-42). Sin embargo, las personales comenzaron a pasar factura a los madridistas, que tuvieron que disminuir la intensidad de su defensa individual. Además, el Maccabi cambió a una zona 2-3 que se le empezó a atragantar a los blancos, y los jugadores del conjunto israelí comenzaron a entonarse en ataque. A pesar de que en el minuto 31 el Real Madrid aún dominaba claramente en el marcador (75-61), las eliminaciones sucesivas de Corbalán y Meister hicieron que los macabeos llegaran a aproximarse peligrosamente (83-80 a falta de 4'13''). Sin embargo, la eliminación de Perry dejó al Maccabi cojo en el rebote, y los suplentes del conjunto madridista supieron mantener el tipo y la calma hasta el bocinazo final. |
