COMPETITION SYSTEM
·
39 teams (domestic Cup champions plus losers of the 1/16
Final round in the European
League 1993-94) are eligible to participate in the
competition. Three qualifying rounds are played first in order
to reduce the final number of entrants to 12.
·
The 12 teams qualified for the 1/4 Final Stage are divided into two groups of
six teams each playing a round-robin. The final standing is based
on individual wins and defeats. In case of a tie between two
or more teams after this group stage, the following criteria
is used to decide the final classification: 1) number of wins
in one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average between
the teams; 3) general basket average within the group.

The group winners and runners-up after the 1/4 Final Stage
qualify for a 1/2 Final Playoff (X-pairings, best of 3 games). · The final is played at a predetermined venue. |

RESUMEN (SUMMARY) El Olimpija de Ljubljana protagonizó la gran sorpresa y, con todo merecimiento, derrotó al gran favorito, Taugrés Baskonia, en la final de la Copa de Europa. Los encargados de cavar la tumba del equipo vitoriano fueron el alero Roman Horvat y el base Dušan Hauptman, que lograron nueve y seis triples, respectivamente, en un auténtico recital de tiro exterior del conjunto esloveno.
Ambos equipos llegaban a la final convencidos de su victoria. El Taugrés, diez días después de perder la Copa del Rey ante el Barcelona, esperaba compensar a su afición. El Olimpija confiaba en la enorme calidad de sus hombres, que ya había quedado patente en la liguilla de clasificación y en las semifinales. El entrenador esloveno, Zmago Sagadin, sabía que la clave del partido pasaba por frenar a Perasović y dominar el rebote ofensivo. En lo primero tuvo éxito, ya que entre Daneu y Gorenc lograron contener al escolta croata. En lo segundo, Đurišić y Nosov, con algún que otro problema ante Rivas y Bannister, también cumplieron su objetivo.
A lo largo del encuentro, los tiradores del Olimpija martillearon una y otra vez el aro vitoriano a base de triples, labor en la que destacó el joven alero Roman Horvat (autor de una increíble serie de 9 canastas de 14 intentos). Mientras, el Taugrés sólo podía oponer el trabajo de Bannister bajo la canasta. El conjunto esloveno tomó la iniciativa en el marcador desde el inicio (13-8, min. 7) y ya no la volvería a perder en todo el encuentro. Pese a algunos intentos de acercamiento por parte del conjunto vitoriano (18-17, min. 9), el Olimpija fue incrementando sus diferencias hasta alcanzar una máxima de quince puntos a cuatro minutos del descanso (37-22). En ese momento Comas decidió cambiar a defensa zonal 1-2-2, algo que pareció sorprender a los eslovenos lo suficiente como para propiciar un parcial de 0-9 a favor del Taugrés, tras un triple de Perasović (37-31). La primera mitad se cerró con la cuarta personal de Đurišić y una técnica tras sus protestas, lo que significó su eliminación, cuatro tiros libres lanzados y convertidos por Bannister y Perasović y un sorprendente 43-41 en el marcador, que no parecía reflejar los méritos de uno y otro.
El panorama del partido apenas sí varió tras el descanso. El Taugrés seguía siempre por detrás y Horvat continuaba con su increíble racha de triples. La eliminación de Đurišić hizo que Comas volviera a defensa individual al inicio de la segunda mitad, pero sin resultados positivos, ya que el sustituto del pívot esloveno, el joven Marko Tušek, no desmereció y contribuyó a incrementar la ventaja del Olimpija (61-51, min. 27). De nuevo la zona sirvió para que los vitorianos recortaran diferencias en el marcador (74-67), pero el Olimpija no se puso nervioso y, de la mano de Horvat y un renacido Hauptman, además de la eficiente defensa de Daneu y Gorenc sobre Perasović, se escapó de forma ya definitiva. La quinta falta personal de Abad y la técnica infantil que se ganó por sus protestas pusieron el 85-72 en el marcador y sellaron definitivamente la victoria eslovena. |
