COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          24 teams (selected by invitation from ULEB among its registered members, based on their domestic and international results over the previous years) enter a Regular Season, divided into four groups of six teams each playing a round-robin. The final standing is based on individual wins and defeats. In case of a tie between two or more teams after this group stage, the following criteria is used to decide the final classification: 1) number of wins in one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average between the teams; 3) general basket average within the group.

·          The top four teams from each group after the Regular Season qualify for an 1/8 Final Playoff (X-pairings, home and away games), with winners advancing further to quarterfinals and semifinals.

·          The final is played at a predetermined venue (the Belgian city of Charleroi). The winner gets a wild card to participate in Euroleague 2006-07.

RESUMEN (SUMMARY)

Primer título europeo para el Dynamo de Moscú, un equipo ruso con 83 años de historia que finalmente accede a la élite europea. Aparte de la consecución del título, el cuadro moscovita obtiene la recompensa de poder participar la temporada próxima en la Euroliga. El trofeo sirve como colofón a una brillante campaña del equipo ruso en la Copa ULEB, con sólo dos derrotas en la fase previa y todos sus partidos ganados durante las rondas eliminatorias.

 

La final de la Copa ULEB se disputó en medio de un ambiente eléctrico y espectacular creado por la mayoría de aficionados griegos que poblaban las gradas del Spiroudôme de Charleroi. Si bien el triunfo final del Dynamo se debió al trabajo de equipo, gran parte del mérito recayó sobre Rubén Douglas, autor de 17 puntos y MVP de la final. Bojan Popović, que volvía al equipo después de una larga ausencia por lesión, desempeñó un papel destacado desde el banquillo, con otros 17 puntos y un increíble 12 de 12 desde la línea de personal (nuevo récord en una final de la Copa ULEB). Otros hombres importantes en el cuadro moscovita fueron Mire Chatman (15 puntos, con 9 de 10 en tiros libres), Lazaros Papadopoulos (autor de un doble-doble, con 12 puntos y 12 rebotes) y Antonis Fotsis (12 rebotes). Por parte del Áris, sus hombres más destacados fueron Terrell Castle (autor de 17 puntos), Georgios Sigalas y Ryan Stack (10 puntos cada uno).

 

El entrenador del Áris, Andrea Mazzon, sorprendió a todos dando entrada en el cinco inicial al habitual reserva Dimitris Charitopoulos para defender a Papadopoulos. El partido comenzó con un festival de triples, con dos lanzamientos convertidos por cada equipo (Chatman-Douglas, Sigalas-Stack). Pese a que las primeras ventajas correspondieron al Áris (6-10, 10-14), el primer cuarto concluyó igualado (19-18). El segundo cuarto se inició con una gran intensidad defensiva por parte de ambos conjuntos, y el partido continuó con la misma dinámica de ventajas favorables a uno y otro equipo (19-22, 24-22). Sin embargo, en los últimos cinco minutos de este periodo Bojan Popović logró 11 puntos que otorgaron al Dynamo una importante ventaja al descanso (37-28).

 

En la reanudación, el Áris logró remontar hasta un 44-45, pero en ese momento surgió la figura de Lazaros Papadopoulos, que aportó 10 puntos consecutivos para un parcial de 19-6 favorable al conjunto ruso que volvió a abrir diferencias a falta de cuatro minutos para el final del partido (63-51). Los nervios comenzaron a aparecer en el Áris, que tuvo tres pérdidas consecutivas de balón. Los aficionados griegos que poblaban las gradas del Spiroudôme comenzaron a intuir que la victoria se le escapaba definitivamente a su equipo, pese que dos canastas consecutivas de Padius y Brewer recortaron la diferencia en el marcador (63-56). El Dynamo no se descompuso ante la presión desesperada de los griegos, y Fotsis prácticamente selló la suerte del partido con dos tiros libres convertidos y un posterior tapón sobre Padius.
