PARTICIPANTS (10)

· Host nation: Argentina.

· Top 3 qualified teams in the preceding Olympic Tournament: USA, France, Brazil.

· Top 3 qualified teams in the South American Championship: Ecuador (late invited replacement for the 1949 South American winner Uruguay, who withdrew for political reasons), Peru (ranked 4th in South American Championship 1949, which took the place of runner-up Brazil, qualified via Olympic Tournament), Chile.

· European Championship winner: Egypt.

· Winner and runner-up in a European Qualifying Tournament: Yugoslavia (ranked 3rd in this tournament, which took the place of winner Italy after the latter’s withdrawal for financial reasons), Spain.

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The ten participating teams are paired in a Preliminary Round (I and II). The four winners advance to the Final Round, whereas the six losers enter an additional Re-Pass Round (I and II) in order to earn two more berths in that final stage.

· The four losers after the Re-Pass Round enter a Classification Round for places 7-10, played as a league stage. The six teams qualified for the Final Round also play a league stage, and the group winner becomes World Champion. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their particular basket average.
