PARTICIPANTS (12)

· Host nation: Brazil.

· Olympic Tournament winner: USA.

· Top 4 qualified teams in the South American Championship: Uruguay, Peru (ranked 5th in South American Championship 1953, which took the place of runner-up Brazil, qualified as tournament host), Chile, Paraguay.

· Top 3 qualified teams in the European Championship: Israel (ranked 5th in Eurobasket 1953, which took the place of winner Soviet Union after the Brazilian government denied entry visas to all communist countries), Yugoslavia (ranked 6th in Eurobasket 1953, which took the place of runner-up Hungary for the same reason as before, as communist Yugoslavia was curiously not banned by the Brazilian government), France.

· The remaining 3 berths are filled by invited teams from two continents: AMERICA (Canada), ASIA (Philippines, Formosa).

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The twelve participating teams are divided in 4 groups of 3 teams each playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their particular basket average.

· The group winners and runners-up advance to the Final Round (places 1-8), played as a league stage, whereas the rest of teams enter a Classification Round (places 9-12), with the same round robin format. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their particular basket average. The Final Round group winner becomes World Champion.
