PARTICIPANTS (13)

· Host nation: Chile.

· Olympic Tournament winner: USA.

· Top 2 qualified teams in the South American Championship: Brazil, Uruguay.

· Top 2 qualified teams in the European Championship: Soviet Union, Bulgaria.

· The remaining 7 berths are filled by invited teams from two continents: AMERICA (Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico), ASIA (Formosa, Philippines, UAR ["United Arab Republic" is the official name of Egypt between 1958 and 1971]).

 

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The thirteen participating teams are divided in 3 groups of 4 teams each (host Chile is bye) playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their particular basket average.

· The group winners and runners-up (together with bye Chile) advance to the Final Round (places 1-7), played as a league stage. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their particular basket average. The group winner at the end of this stage becomes World Champion.

· The rest of teams not qualified for the Final Round enter a Classification Round (places 8-13), divided in 2 groups of 3 teams each playing a round robin and later a head-to-head match with the team from the other group qualified in the same position.

* After the withdrawal of Soviet Union and Bulgaria in their games with Formosa, FIBA Central Board deprived these two teams of all their points in the Final Round and scratched their matches, thus drastically altering the final classification (the USSR was the virtual winner, even after the 2-0 defeat against Formosa).

[Incidents: After FIBA’s decision to deprive the Soviet Union (virtual winner of the tournament) of all its points and cancel its games, as a punishment for the Soviet withdrawal against Formosa, the last competition match between Brazil and Chile turned out decisive to unveil the new world champion: Brazil just needed to win this game or lose it by less than 12 points, whereas Chile could still become world champion in case of defeating the Brazilians by 12 or more points.]
