PARTICIPANTS (12)

· Host nation: Canada.

· Top 3 qualified teams in the previous Olympic Tournament: Soviet Union, USA, Cuba.

· Pan-American Games winner: Puerto Rico (runner-up, takes the place of the USA, qualified via Olympic Games).

· Asian Championship winner: Japan (runner-up, takes the place of China, which withdrew before the competition).

· African Championship winner: Egypt.

· Oceania Championship winner: Australia.

· The remaining 4 berths are allocated after a Pre-Olympic Stage gathering 17 teams of national federations associated to FIBA, under free registration, from two continents (EUROPE, AMERICA). This competition is divided into two major gegraphical groups: European Pre-Olympic Tournament (Belgium, England*, France, Ireland, Israel*, Italy, Poland*, Yugoslavia*) and Pan-Continental Pre-Olympic Tournament (Brazil, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, England*, Finland, Iceland, Israel*, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland*, Spain, Sweden, Yugoslavia*).

* Although England, Israel, Poland and Yugoslavia didn’t earn an Olympic berth in the European Pre-Olympic Tournament, they were allowed to participate later in the Pan-Continental Pre-Olympic Tournament.

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The twelve participating teams are divided in 2 groups of 6 teams each playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their basket average.

· The group winners and runners-up advance to the semifinal round (played as an X-pairing). The two winners after the semifinals qualify for the final, whereas the two losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.

(*) NOTE: Egypt withdrew after their first game following the decision of the International Olympic Committee not to expel New Zealand from the Games. The reason for this was that the All Blacks travelled to South Africa to play a rugby game against the Springbocks, in a period when South Africa was banned from international competitions due to the “apartheid,” and this led to the unanimous protest of the rest of African countries.
