PARTICIPANTS (12)

· Host nation: Australia.

· World Championship winner: Yugoslavia.

· European Championship winner: Italy.

· FIBA Americas Championship winner: USA.

· African Championship winner: Angola.

· Asian Championship winner: China.

· Oceania Championship winner: New Zealand.

· To distribute the remaining 5 berths of the Olympic Tournament, each continent will qualify the same number of teams as those that finished the last World Championship ranked between places 2 and 6. Since the teams qualified in Athens 1998 in these positions were Russia, USA, Greece, Spain and Italy, Europe receives 4 berths and America gets only 1. In this juncture, the extra spots for the European continent are allocated to the nations that finished in places 2-5 in the preceding European Championship (Spain, France, Lithuania, Russia, with the 6th-ranked Russia replacing the otherwise qualified Yugoslavia), whereas the berth for the American continent is allocated to Canada (as runner-up in the FIBA Americas Championship).

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The twelve participating teams are divided in 2 groups of 6 teams each playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their basket average.

· The top four teams after the group stage advance to the quarterfinals (played as an X-pairing). The four winners after this knock-out round qualify for the semifinals (places 1-4).

· The two winners after the semifinals qualify for the final, whereas the two losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.
