PARTICIPANTS (12)

· Host nation: Greece.

· World Championship winner: Serbia-Montenegro.

· European Championship winner: Lithuania.

· FIBA Americas Championship winner: USA.

· African Championship winner: Angola.

· Asian Championship winner: China.

· Oceania Championship winner: Australia.

· To distribute the remaining 5 berths of the Olympic Tournament, each continent will qualify the same number of teams as those that finished the last World Championship ranked between places 2 and 6. Since the teams qualified in Indianapolis 2002 in these positions were Argentina, Germany, New Zealand, Spain and USA, America and Europe receive 2 berths each, whereas Oceania gets the remaining berth. In this juncture, the extra spots for the European continent are allocated to the nations that finished in places 2-3 in the preceding European Championship (Spain, Italy), the American berths go to the nations qualified 2-3 in the last FIBA Americas Championship (Argentina, Puerto Rico), and finally the spot for Oceania is allocated to runner-up New Zealand.

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The twelve participating teams are divided in 2 groups of 6 teams each playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their basket average.

· The top four teams after the group stage advance to the quarterfinals (played as an X-pairing). The four winners after this knock-out round qualify for the semifinals (places 1-4).

· The two winners after the semifinals qualify for the final, whereas the two losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.
