Champions
Cup 1968-69
(From 18-09-1968 to 28-05-1969)
COMPETITION
SYSTEM
·
32 teams (domestic champions
plus title holder) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides
the winner.
·
Ties are resolved with a third
game at a neutral venue (or a participant's court, if so agreed). Should the tie hold after regulation and
extra time, a coin toss will decide the winner. [Note:
Exceptionally, only for first and second rounds of the competition,
the “away goals double value” rule is applied: if the aggregate score
after first and second leg renders a tie, the team that scored more
goals away advances (e.g.: TEAM X-TEAM Y [1-0 / 1-2], TEAM X advances). If this rule cannot be applied and the
tie still holds after regulation, an extra time will be played (in which
goals don't count for the “away” rule), and lastly a coin toss will
decide the winner.]
·
A final game is played at a
predetermined venue. [Note: As a novelty
in European competitions, introduced from English football, substitutions
of two players are allowed in every game. In relation with this new
rule, fixed numbers are assigned to the players. Also, fixed match dates
are introduced (normally on Wednesdays and leaving two weeks between
first and second leg).] |

withdrew after the draw. ** After the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warszaw
Pact troops in August
1968, UEFA had to redraw the first round
pairings in which Western Europe teams
were matched against Eastern Europe
teams, because some Western clubs
refused to play against their “communist”
rivals as a way of political protest. The original
pairings were as follows: Ferencvárosi
TC (HUN) - Celtic FC (SCO), FK Levski

political reasons. (a) Played in Valletta. (b)

a Bals. |
