Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 1964-65
(From 2-09-1964 to 23-06-1965)
COMPETITION
SYSTEM
·
48 teams (best qualified clubs
in domestic leagues) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis.
The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.
·
Ties are resolved with a third
game (normally at a participant's court, which is decided on a coin
toss in the second leg). Should
the tie hold after regulation and extra-time, a coin toss will decide
the winner.
·
The final is played on a home
and away basis. [Note:
Exceptionally, the two finalists of this edition decide to play the
final as a single game.] [Note: From this edition
on, Fairs Cup is officially recognized by UEFA as their third European
tournament (together with Champions Cup and Cup Winners' Cup), which
means that only single teams (not city selects) are allowed to participate,
and they cannot compete simultaneously in Fairs Cup and any of the other
two UEFA competitions (as before). Also, in connection to this, the
tournament will progressively adopt a yearly format, spanning over a
single Eurocups season (usually from September to May).] |
