Intercontinental Cup 1971

[Note: The runner-up of the 1971 European Champions Cup, Panathinaïkós AO, replaced the winner (AFC Ajax) in the final of Intercontinental Cup because the Dutch team refused to travel to Uruguay for the second leg against the South American champion Nacional of Montevideo (unofficially, the reason for this withdrawal was the fear of injuries in Ajax players, after the recent episodes of violence in Intercontinental Cup finals).]

FIRST LEG

STADIUM: Karaïskáki (Peiraiás, Athína)

DATE: 15-12-1971 (xxx h)

ATTENDANCE: 45.000

REFEREE: José Favilli Neto (BRA)

GOALS: 1-0 (Fylakouris 48'); 1-1 (Artime 52')

BOOKED: xxx

[Incidents: Morales was sent off (min. 60) after a tough tackling on Tomaras, whose right leg’s shinbone was horribly fractured. As a compensation for this sad incident, the coach and players of Nacional offered to pay for the hospital expenses of the Greek player. Earlier in the game, Kouvas also suffered a hard tackling and had to be substituted with an ankle injury. After the match, there were rumours that Panathinaïkós, infuriated by the Uruguayan toughness, had contacted UEFA to request the cancellation of the second leg in Montevideo.]
