* Manchester United FC participates in Cup Winners' Cup (C2) as the title holder.

(1) When C1 starts, the Ukrainian team FK Dynamo still plays for USSR, but during the competition it joins the newly created Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a political entity which will further originate the different republics created after the disappearance of the Soviet Union.

(2) After the fall of Berlin Wall and the unification of both Germanies, teams belonging to the former FRG and GDR compete under a single flag: Germany.
