Olympic Football Tournament (Paris 1900)

(From 20-09-1900 to 23-09-1900)

* NOTE: Paris 1900 were the first Olympic Games in which a football tournament was contested, although it was merely a demonstration sport and no medals were awarded (in fact, it was not a “tournament” proper, because the three participating teams played only two games). However, in an effort to reconcile the early Olympiads with the modern games, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) currently credits the countries represented by these three teams with gold, silver and bronze medals, according to their final classification.

PARTICIPANTS (5)

· One team representing the host nation: Club Français (FRANCE), champion of Paris, proposed by the USFSA (Union des Sociétés Françaises des Sports Athlétiques).

· Four teams representing invited nations: Fédération Universitaire (BELGIUM), a university student selection reinforced with players from other Belgian clubs; Upton Park FC (GREAT BRITAIN); two more clubs from Switzerland and Germany (these two countries refused the invitation to participate in the Olympic Tournament because they were unable to make a selection of players).

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The host team (Club Français) plays successive demonstration games against the four invited teams (Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Great Britain)*.

· At the end of each game, an object of art will be offered to the winning team, and all the participant players will receive a souvenir.

* After the withdrawals of Switzerland and Germany, the original competition programme (four demonstration games from September 20 to October 7) was rescheduled with only two games: France-Great Britain and France-Belgium.
