PARTICIPANTS (18)

· Host nation: Netherlands.

· Seventeen invited nations: Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Egypt, Estonia (withdrew before the competition), France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Uruguay, USA, Yugoslavia.

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The eighteen participating teams are paired in a first knock-out round (a preliminary round between four drawn teams is played first in order to accommodate the matches of the first round). The winners advance to quarterfinals and further semifinals. The two surviving teams after this last elimination round qualify for the final, whereas the two semifinal losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.

[NOTE: Additionally, four of the losers in the elimination rounds—Netherlands, Belgium, Chile, Mexico—played a Consolation Series in different Dutch cities. Although these games are not included in the official Olympic report as part of the football tournament programme, they are ratified by FIFA as "official" matches.]
